I'm a bee keeper again.

With the impending operation to repair my tired wore out knees we decided to sell our bees last winter. Of course I was not going to sell a pig in a poke so all sales would be final April 1st 2016 when the bees were known to be alive in the hive and the queen laying. Buyer got one screen bottom board per colony, one deep with bees and laying queen, hive top feeder, intercover and outer cover. They also got a phone number in case they had any problems, A sheet of what to do and when to do it and when they came for them help loading them. Must be gone by April 10th.

All were gone by the 8th so now I am no longer a bee keeper per say.

I got all the dead outs from all the yards and brought them home and the second deeps of all the sold colony's. I got them all sorted out and saved all the new comb frames that didn't look so bad. got them stored away. All that is left it stuff I plan on melting all the wax from stacked by the solar melter.

So I am out doing some trimming out front and around the solar melter which I finished. Went to put the trimmer away and hear that unmistakable sound of a honey bee swarm in the sky. They decided to take up resident in one of the stacks of deeps had. Thankfully they picked a short stack so it won't be hard to move them later once they settle in.

I think I can handle one or two colonies even after I get my right knee done in August.

Ya I love it. I contacted a friend in SEMBA who once told me he had some from up my way in his summer bee keeping class.

He told me it was a lady and lives a 1/4 mile south of me on my road. Bet those bees came from there.

No I was not able to split the swarm.  Hopeing it makes it thru the winter. Winter has been tough with well below normal temps.

I am even fearing running out of fire wood to heat my house. Been cutting a lot of dead Elm and Ash I can get too.

How are your bees doing Al?

I got most of mine through the Winter up until Spring came early and the temperatures got unusually warm.  This caused the hives to brood up and they Mother Nature had here way and we got hit with 3 really hard frosts which killed off about half of the hives I got through the winter.

That left me with 30 hives.  I purchased 9 and we found a nice queen cell in one of these so we made a nuc on the spot.  Now that nuc is in a 10 frame deep.  The rest of the hives I built up really big.  Like 3 to 5 ten frame deep boxes big in an effort to split like crazy and try to make up my losses.  I have split all of the those surviving hives at least once and some I have split twice, a few 3 times.

This week I will be splitting the rest of the hives and removing them from the commercial 6 way pallets and placing them on a regular hive stand.  They will all be single deep 10 frame hives with a  queen excluder and medium honey supers stacked on top as needed.  We hope to be pushing a 100 hives if all goes well.

The bees are making honey like gang busteres!  They have a record bloom of black berries and now the tulip poplars are blooming.

In June I will be looking at treating for mites again.  I am treating right now with Apivar.  I purchased 3 Mitey Mite Killers at the Tennessee Beekeepers Conference and am looking forward to trying them out to see how they work.  I also got a Pro Vap 110 to do oxalic acid vapor treatments.

It will be interesting to see what the girls produce.

I can reply to threads here but I can not make any new ones up.

I don't like being absent for several months but have no choice.

We made it thru endless winter  that went to prolonged mud season and then summer.

Yeah, I had the same problem with posting and replying too.  Mike is currently working on it. Very frustrating.

Al, I just posted a new thread without any problem.  Please give it another try and see if it works for you now.
